Essential Oils for Cats
Most of the essential oils that are available in the market today consist of an organic compound known as phenol or carbolic acid. Although humans have a higher tolerance for phenol that is present in essential oils, cats don’t.
Cats normally have a deficiency in an enzyme known as glucuronyl transferase, which is responsible for breaking down phenol. Hence, it is important that are always very careful when using essential oils on your cat. This being said, there are quite a few essential oils that are safe for your feline friend.
Cedarwood Oil
Cedarwood essential oil is safe for your cat as this oil does not contain phenol in it. But one should always check the label of contents before you use it on your cat. Cedarwood oil acts as a great flea repellent and spraying cedarwood oil on your curtains can help to kill fleas as they are hatching. Adding a drop or two of cedar oil on the collar of your cat can help keep fleas at bay.
Lemongrass Oil
Lemongrass oil is produced by steam-distilling or hydro-distilling of the lemongrass plant. It is found in the form of a hydrosol that is 100% non-alcoholic and is hence safe for you to use on your pet cat. However, you need to make sure that you use lemongrass oil that has a low concentration around your feline friend. Make sure that you do not feed your cat lemongrass oil orally or apply the oil directly on your cat’s skin.
Rosemary Oil
Pet owners normally use rosemary oil to keep fleas away from their pet cats. To make your own flea repellent using rosemary, you will need to boil a pot of water and add one twig of rosemary to it. Once that is done, dilute the water with the rosemary in it with more water and finally allow your cat to sit in the rosemary water for some time. Do not rub your cat dry after he/she gets out of the rosemary bath; allow the water to dry naturally. This will help to keep fleas at bay.
Lavender Oil
Sometimes you may find that your cat smells bad. Making use of lavender oil can help get rid of any bad smell that may come from your cat. Lavender oil also has some soothing properties that can help your cat stay calm and relaxed.
Sweet Basil
Sweet basil is another essential oil that is safe to use around your cat. It can be used as a deodorizer and air freshener. Sweet basil also has antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial properties in it thereby making it safe and good for your cat. Sweet basil oil can also be used as a cure for any cuts and abrasions that your cat might have.
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is great for keeping fleas and other pests away from your feline friend. However, you will need to avoid spraying the peppermint oil directly on your cat; spray the oil mixed in water around the furniture, bedding, and carpet. Dipping a flea comb in the oil mixed with water and combing your cat’s fur with it can also help keep away fleas.
